Lost in the sea ...

Data is amassing at such an incredible pace that not only are we lost in this massive 'seas of data', ironically, we are equally at lost in our proprietary data. Often, we might not even know that data that we have and how useful or valuable they can be - particularly if they are scattered across different groups, different departments, different subsidiaries and so on. To further complicate matter, they may be stored in different file formats or structures. To integrate and link these heterogeneous sources for discovery purpose is extremely challenging.

Without an effective means to tackle this onslaught, we are left with more questions than answers.

  • What can we do with these proprietary data/information that we have ?
    • Is there any value to these data ?
    • What new facts or knowledge can we discover from these data ?
    • Can we use these data to make better decision ?
    • Can we use these data to improve our business or create new business opportunities or find new potential partners/clients ?
    • Who are the experts in our company/organization ? What are their expertise ?
  • How can we unlock and harness the value captured in these valuable data/information vault ?
  • How can we enrich/augment these proprietary data of ours with what is found in the Internet ?
  • How can we easily integrate the many silos of data scattered across locally or globally within the company ?
  • Faced with these many complex kinds of data, is it still possible to have a simple and integrated access to them ?
  • How can we enable people across the different domains, different expertise, different departments/groups to share their data, information and knowledge effectively ?
  • How can we connect the 'dots' in the obvious, not-so-obvious or even hidden knowledge found within the different silos or layers of data to extract new insights, new knowledge ?
  • Is there an effective way to empower non-expert users to have access to these data and enable them to independently discover new knowledge on their own ?

Is there a solution/answer to these questions ?

... how about existing solutions ?

Search tools have provided us the means to efficiently locate many documents and websites. But answers to these questions will require much more. We need RELEVANCE, we need the ability to go DELVE DEEP INTO A SUJBECT/DOMAIN, we need an EASY way to CONNECT THE 'DOTS'.

For instance, the nature of the contents of a patent (highly technical) is very different from a newspaper article. The jargons used in one can be almost absent from the other. Moreover, a content can be presented as unstructured (e.g. free text) to highly structured (e.g. tabular spreadsheet, relational database) format, thus further complicating extraction and recognition. There is also the need to take into account of the context of a user's intention as it has direct bearing on the relevance of the returned results. A user might use a different word to query (e.g. Panadol or Tylenol instead of paracetamol or para-acetylaminophenol) compared to what a system might have indexed. It will be extremely difficult or even impossible to retrieve the intended documents if we do not consider these factors.

In all these cases, Semantic Technologies could provide a feasible and practical solution.
